Safe Spaces is a pilot project launched in Hamilton in June 2017. Safe Spaces provide a safe place for people who are experiencing mental health distress. The River Trading Company is a participant in the pilot project and has received professional training, not to be expert, but to simply assist people to feel safe. Mary McGowan, co-founder of The River Trading Company says, ” We are part of the Safe Spaces project because we are part of the community and we care.”
A community partnership, Safe Spaces is funded by The Ontario Trillium Foundation, lead by St. Joseph’s Hospital and involves Mission Services, the Barton Street BIA and designated businesses and community organizations that can be identified by a Safe Spaces sign displayed on the exterior of buildings. Any person needing a safe space is welcome to The River Trading Company and to other designated locations.
