A new chapter in the story of the bookstore on Barton began with sadness when a beloved cat passed away and continues with sweet serendipity when another cat arrived, bearing gifts.
Many visitors to The River Trading Company will remember Walter, the cat found frequently flopped contently down on the store counter. Sadly last fall Walter suddenly died leaving a void which Mary and David, owners of the bookstore considered filling by fostering homeless cats.
Before they were able to make a decision about fostering, a scrawny, stray cat began to appear in the alley behind the store. They began feeding the cat outside. Soon it was discovered the little cat is pregnant.
One cold, rainy night that was too miserable to leave any creature outside, Mary and David left the door open to the stock room, providing the cat access to safe and dry shelter. Before long the cat had entered the bookstore, their home and their hearts. By May they had named the now full bellied feline, Angie. On the first of June Angie gave birth to four kittens: Maggie and Hudson were born first, followed soon after by Casper and Bliss.
Mary and David have committed to providing a permanent loving home to Angie and her kittens, who join their family of senior animals friends in residence at The River Trading Company. The kittens have been vet checked, are all in good health and are currently being weaned by their mom Angie. Once weaned and fixed they are welcome to take over where Walter’s legacy left off, free to be in the bookstore, greeting and being a joy to guests.
